GREENWICH — After more than 50 gallons of diesel spilled into the Binney Park pond earlier this week, a massive cleanup effort is still underway, town officials said.
Cleanup efforts are ongoing as of this weekend, First Selectman Fred Camillo told Old Greenwich residents and visitors to the park in a message. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is overseeing the situation.
The spill occurred around 5:44 a.m. on May 26 due to a truck’s “equipment failure,” or a hole in the side of its saddle tank, officials said.
At around 11:30 a.m., a resident reported an odd odor and water sheen in the brook. Officials then discovered the leaking vehicle on I-95.
The Greenwich Fire Department immediately tried to contain impact to the main pond, officials said.
When DEEP arrived, the leak had stopped with 50 to 70 gallons of diesel released. DEEP’s environmental cleanup efforts will likely be continued for the next few weeks, officials said.
Officials are alerting residents that there will likely be a combination of pollen and emulsified material in the area in the future and that this is not cause for concern.
A stream that enters the pond at its north end also reaches Long Island Sound, officials said. The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the spillage.
Officials have said there will likely not be any lasting environmental impact or impact to water wells. They have not noted any distressed wildlife either, officials said.
