According to Reuters, the one-year-old baby elephant fell into the drainage hole first as its mother watched nearby. As a rescue team — composed of park officials and veterinarians — arrived, the stressed mother elephant, who was anesthetized in an effort to calm her down, also fell into the hole.

A crane was used to lift the unconscious mother out to safety. The rescue team then jumped up and down on the elephant’s body as makeshift CPR in an effort to revive her.

The Guardian reported a digger was used to create an escape route out of the two-metre-deep crater for the calf. The baby elephant ran out of the hole to its mother’s side.

The mother elephant regained consciousness after her baby began suckling. She then stood up and the two animals returned to their natural habitat.

The entire rescue process took three hours while it poured rain.

In an interview with Sky News, veterinarian Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak said despite the obstacles, the “mother did not leave her baby’s side,” and that the “experience touched our hearts and will be one of the most memorable rescues we’ve done.”
