Thus, Splatoon 3 is one of the big expectations of the Nintendo Switch at the start of the school year. It will complete an already busy 2022 with the many exclusives that have arrived on Big N’s latest console. As a preview, we spent a good hour on the title to discover the first levels of the story mode and test the modes of online games. Here’s what we can say!

The preview of Splatoon 3 begins in Cité-Clabousse, the city of the game that allows us to access many places. It is from here that we went to Utopile Futura, the first world of this Splatoon 3. The ideal place which allows us to discover the first levels of the game which will highlight the new features of this opus.

We were able to discover three levels: Alterna, Podo-hostile missiles and the Trispercer without clashes. These are relatively simple levels, which act as tutorials to get back into the swing of things and discover the new techniques implemented in this Splatoon 3.

As in the old games, we have a paint gauge that we must monitor so as not to run out of ammo. By pressing ZL, it is possible to dive into the paint you have already spread on the ground to refill your tank. Small novelty, it is possible to paint some walls to climb them. This will again fill your gauge, but also surprise your opponents by performing a jump followed by a nice burst of paint in the head.

The first levels of the story mode also allow us to make diversions with our dirtymioche, the little hen who follows us throughout the adventure and who can help us in certain situations. Whether it’s to unlock mechanisms, passages, or distract enemies to attack them when they’re not paying attention.

The last level, “Seamless Trispercer”, allows us to take control of the Trispercer, the new weapon of the game. It is a kind of arc allowing to attack in a horizontal or vertical way and which allows you to run three coats of paint at the same time. Ideal for quick attacks, but also for powerful attacks. If you keep pressing the fire button, you will make a charged shot which only launches a single layer of paint, but much more powerful.

If you shoot while staying on the ground, this will allow you to make a horizontal attack. If you shoot while jumping, it will trigger a vertical attack. A nice and quite effective weapon.

It is important to note that in Splatoon 3 the joy-con’s gyroscope function is enabled. Thus, you must move your controllers (or your console in handheld mode) to aim! Fear not for those who are not fans, it is entirely possible to deactivate this parameter to aim in the classic way with the joysticks.

These first levels are rather nice, but nevertheless remain very simple. As we mentioned earlier, they mainly serve as tutorials and do not really offer challenges. However, they allow you to discover the new level design of the game, much more interesting than the two previous opuses, and they are perfect for getting back into the bath and going back to the basics of Splatoon.

Back in Cité-Clabousse, no time to visit. Direction Calamarcade to test the online modes. For the first part, we test the famous quick match where two teams of four players compete to control a territory. Small novelty, while waiting for the launch of the game, we can wait in a training room. This allows us to discover the equipment and accessories of our opponents.

Another useful novelty, from the start of the game, is the fact of being able to choose where to catapult. So that all team members do not land in the same place, it is now possible to choose with an arrow where you want to land on the MAP to attack at different places. This adds a nice little tactical side to the game.

Overall, there is not much to say about this turf war, largely inspired by the first two games and improved in Splatoon 3. The concept remains the same with new MAPS adapted to the new game mechanics and new weapons. .

When you’re transformed into squids and moving around in the paint, you can perform a new move that can save the day. By pressing jump and positioning the joystick in the opposite direction of your direction, your character will perform a lightning U-turn which will allow you to flee. Very useful if you find yourself in the middle of the opposing party, surrounded by your enemies.

Finally, the last part of this preview concerns the Salmon Run mode. The latter is back in Splatoon 3. This is again a mode already seen, but slightly improved and still as effective. This time it’s not about competition, but about cooperation. Up to four players, you will have to survive waves of enemies and collect eggs.

In this game mode, you cannot choose your weapons, with each wave the game assigns you new equipment. It’s a good way to be able to test the entire arsenal of the game. Again, no big changes. This game mode is very similar to the one we had in the previous game, it just allows you to adapt with the new mechanics. It remains a very effective and pleasant mode which can offer a fairly high challenge depending on the difficulty chosen.

For the moment, it is far too early to form a definitive opinion on Splatoon 3. With this first hour spent on the game, we have more the impression of playing an update of Splatoon 2, rather than a new opus. It’s still pleasant, with very nice new features that make it possible to energize the game and add some useful features.

We always find this artistic direction specific to the license and this joyful atmosphere. All the interest of the title will undoubtedly reside in the new story mode, which we have not yet had the opportunity to fully discover. On the online game side, the territory wars and the Salmon Run mode have been reviewed and improved and still seem to be as effective as ever.
